Fishing continues to be fantastic as we push into the middle of July. Cold temps near shore have lead to great near shore mixed bag fishing. There are tons of mature kings in that 12 to 16# range around right now, lots of coho’s (especially the farther south you get), many steelhead in that 4 to 10# range (depending on the day with some anglers reporting 10+ fish) and a few lake trout and browns mixed in. The best range has been from 20 to 70 FOW with that 40 to 60 FOW producing the best action.
As for baits, everything you throw at them as been working, but they have all had there moments. The bait preference has been changing on a daily and sometimes hourly basis. Some days they have been eating flies while other days it has been a spoon or plug bite so through a bit of everything in the mix and find the pattern.
The top spoon patterns for us over the last week have been the Stinger super glow bloody nose, blue angel, neon wonderbread, Ludington special, and Kevorkian (Silver back) in the std. and stingray sizes. Also, the cracked ice and blue oz mag pro kings have been studs. The best plugs have been Silver Hordes in the Glow/ Vivid Mother of Pearl (Wonderbread), cracked ice, silver bullet, and green glow patterns. The top performing flasher flies have been the green glow pro chip w/ the Rapture Hypnotist, green glow hot chip w/ the Rapture Wild Fern, and blue bubble pro chip w/ the Rapture Last Supper.
The spoons have been producing on 2 and 3 color SWR’s, long lead off the riggers and on the lead cores, plugs on long leads off the riggers or on the cores, and flasher/flies off lead core or dipsies with the wire divers producing the best action.
The winds over the next few days will change things up but we should continue to see great fish continue especially as we approach August and more mature kings continue to show up.
Best of luck to all participating in the Big Fish Bash the rest of the week!
